Abstract:
The development of digital technology has given rise to new organizational forms based on digital platforms, and the control of digital labor by capital has also presented new characteristics. Through field research and in-depth interviews, it was found that data annotators are in a mixed control system, which includes algorithmic control based on annotation platforms, hierarchical differential management, and multiple consent manufacturing mechanisms such as “manufacturing players”, “manufacturing dreams”, and “manufacturing the sublime”. To counter this new labor control model, data annotators not only carry out organized collective resistance but also implement individualized counter-control actions by leveraging “practical algorithmic knowledge”. However, this has not fundamentally changed their disadvantaged position. Platform workers are still trapped in multiple predicaments: labor alienation under algorithmic control, blurred boundaries between work and rest under false freedom, and the absence of labor protection due to the de-labor relations. In response to this, it is urgent to strengthen the regulation of capital and enhance the subject consciousness of digital workers, promote the reconstruction of the time order of workers and gradually establish a legal system for offline rights, and build a multi-subject collaborative labor protection system to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of platform workers.
